How to Kick Start Your Journaling Practice

Let’s be honest here, journaling can feel….

Awkward.

Regardless of how often you journal it can feel really awkward to journal sometimes. From seasoned journal-ers to those of you who are picking one up for the first time, sometimes you just don’t know where to start!

Well today’s post is for you!

The biggest piece of advice that I give to people struggling to start or enjoy a journaling practice is to Just Sit There (JST)…

Give yourself time - say 10-30 minutes and literally just start writing.

Start with the most awkward things that come to your mind.

Dear diary,

My name is Harmony and I don’t know what to write.

Yep. You can literally start like this.

Write about how uncomfortable you feel, write like it’s a letter, write like it’s a prayer, write about what happened in your day.

Just START writing! This is THE most important thing. No matter how pointless or uncomfortable it feels.

I promise you, the more frequently you give yourself the chance to JST and start writing any and everything that comes into your mind, the more comfortable you will get with writing, talking to yourself, and journaling.

Remember there is no right or wrong way to do this so let it be a MESS. Or let it be perfect. Whatever feels best is the best place for you to start. Trust yourself and let anything flow.

Before you know it you’ll be journaling for an hour with endless things to say, tapping into your unconscious mind and thoughts, learning so much about yourself, and feeling SO incredible after your journaling sessions.

The next thing you can do to kick start your journaling practice is to use journaling prompts or purchase a journaling course like my course Unwritten.

Asking yourself questions is one of the BEST ways to unlock your unconscious and begin to understand yourself on a deeper level.

Often we don’t even really realize the thought patterns that dictate our experience of life until we begin to dig deep and ask ourselves the hard questions.

The key here is to practice radical honesty.

The answers that come through might not have been what you wanted to hear or what you expected from yourself. Now is your turn to look at those answers with curiosity rather than judgement and just let yourself be EXACTLY who you are. Even if it’s just within the pages of your journal for now. Let every single part of you be SEEN and be okay.

Last but not least, you can do intentional journaling.

For instance, doing something like a daily gratitude rampage, a prayer journal where you talk to a higher power, a desire rampage, or a manifestation rampage can be an incredible experience.

My biggest tip for these is to always write as if you already already have what you want. Even if you don’t yet.

So for instance:

I love being a millionaire. The money didn’t make me who I am, but the woman I became in order to live this life and make this money blows me away. I am beyond proud of myself. My relationship with my husband and kids has never been this good…. God, universe, spirit guide… Thank you so much for all of these blessings.

Etc. you get the idea!

Write as if it’s your reality even if it isn’t… YET!

So as you can see there are a ton of ways to kick off your journaling journey!

The most important thing is to have a journal you love and set aside time each day to invest in this new blossoming relationship between you, yourself, and your journal.

Happy writing!

xo, Harmony
